The hike is approximately 6 miles round trip and 1,200 feet gain on packed dirt and then pavement.
From the parking lot, pass through the gate and hike up Brush Canyon. At the top of Brush Canyon where the trail intersects with Mt. Hollywood Drive, proceed west (left) along the dirt fire road. After about 0.75 miles, take the top (right) trail when you encounter a fork. Continue for 0.25 miles where the dirt trail ends at the paved Mt Lee Drive. Proceed to the right, climbing uphill and follow the trail as it wraps around Mt. Lee, offering a 360 degree view including the back of the Hollywood Sign.
Keep in mind that this is a desert, and there is no water and little shade along the trail, so bring water.
Also of interest is an optical illusion that turns the Hollywood Sign into an OHLLYWODO sign from some locations on the trail.
If you are interested in getting to the sign as quickly as possible, there is a paved shorter hike you can find elsewhere online. Also, there are numerous horseback and mountain bike trails nearby in Griffith Park.
