Ape cave is the longest lava flow tube in the lower 48.
Ape Cave has two self guided interpritive trails with signs. Guided tours are available in late summer. You'll want to bring warm clothing and good flash lights or lanterns.
If you are going with children, do the lower cave it is much easier. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to complete and is about 3/4 of a mile.
The upper cave is for the more advanced hiker. You have to climb some rock walls that are about 8-9 feet high. It's about twice as long and takes 2 1/2 to 3 hours to complete.

There is a smooth walking path that is about 1 mile long to get to the caves. There really is no elevation gain or loss on the trail.
There are no points within 15 miles of this point.
