The picnic area/parking area is about 1 1/4 east of the NE Entrance road and the Grand Loop road junction. It is on the south side of the road and is hard to miss.

This is a great hike to start out or end with a picnic. The Yellowstone River Trail starts out up a short steep incline. Once on top though, the rest of the trail is fairly level. The trail follows the ridge above the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

There are good views from this trail. Be sure to bring water because there is little shade along the trail.

We have seen Mountain Goat up close along this trail.
